How big is affiliate marketing on the internet?

I am trying to guage the size of the affiliate marketing on the internet, in $ amount. I am helping a friend write a business school paper.

* what % of rev comes through affiliates, typically?

* How many affiliates are out there? How much does make on average?

* How has this market grown over the years? down/up?

Affiliate marketing is just a new name for cross promotion, performance based marketing and/or really, commission sales. It is a huge industry that continues to grow. What makes it easy on the internet is that there are electronic tools to track it and do the reporting, which isn't always as easy with non-electronic cross promotions or joint ventures. It is definitely increasing.

As for how much people make, there are probably 10s of thousands, if not hundreds making full time income in this manner. The challenge is that probably 90% of affiliates that sign up do not have the where with all to actually effectively market the given program. It is not unlike other business ventures where many do not put enough effort in, or underestimate the capital required to penetrate the market effectively.

Affiliate Marketing is pretty massive, just about every website is running some sort of program. Most top tier companies pay a small percentage, anywhere from 5% - 10%. Companies that are not so well know offer a very high %. Most of them start at 50% and go very high. I don't know how many affiliates are out there but I meet thousands of them at trade show, for example right now the SES is going on is San Jose, you will find tons of people doing affiliate marketing. The market keeps growing everyday.
