Do most religious people only affiliate themselves with a religion because they want to go to heaven?

Do you think most people would still be religious if their religions didn't promise an after-life? Do you think it's because people are afraid of death and they find comfort in the idea of an after-life?

No, because they want to know what their purpose in life is. Religions generally address themselves to this, and other "important" spiritual questions.

Being afraid of death, the existence of an afterlife, etc., are also part of these important spiritual questions.

Have a blessed day.

Ha nice question. I'm a Christian and I guess i'm pretty spiritual and sometimes i think of the same question about my own faith. I honestly don't know if I would still be religious without the idea of an afterlife. It depends on the person though because if they are like really hardcore, faithful people to their own religion, they might still follow the ways of their own religion, as oppose to some people who convert because they say "it's the way to heaven." I guess for alot of people who have religions find comfort in the idea that there is an afterlife, but I can confidently say that there are many who just want to follow their religion whatever happens. But there are also people I guess who fake this faithfulness which is not very good.

I'm sure there are a lot out there that join just to be saved. In fact there are a lot of religions that have very bad consequences if you leave or commit too many sins to keep you in line. Whether it so you don't make them look bad or because they care, it doesn't matter. I have known some people that to the congregations they look good but in their private lives, they are someone else all together.

I think religion would lose their hold on a lot of people if the leaders didn't promise prosperity, happiness, wealth, heaven, paradise, or some kind of reward. It's like the job you are in. If they didn't promise you a pay check, wouldn't you leave?

On the contrary, not all people are afraid of death that pray to a God. Some pray for death. And then wonder why they are still living. Whether death to them is heaven or just sleep that is never ending.

Yes. But you also have to remember that with every heaven in religion there is a hell. And there are just as many people that want a life in heaven, as there are that are afraid of life in hell.

Some do it, because hell is no fun place to go, so they say.

No, for me i just simply believe that evolution is impossible, and I've had many experiences that make it extremely difficult for me not to believe in God and in my faith. It isn't because of 'wanting to go to heaven' and that's awfully judgmental of people to put everyone in the same group.

Religion would never guarantee u to go to heaven. Religion would only help/guide/improve your relationship with the Lord. This is the fellowship Jesus had with his disciples teaching and preaching. Going to heaven is the promise given by Jesus in..

King James Bible

John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Well, that is the core of ANY religion, the ability to escape or circumvent death. Nothing more, nothing less. It also shows why only we humans have religion, we are the only animal that can contemplate and comprehend its own death.

It's different for everyone

I don't personally.

probably.

Yes they do!

It's kind of childish really.

you hit the nail on the head.
