When advertising as an affiliate is it more profitable to place the ad on free ad sites?

Is starting my own web page easier and place ads for that or should I advertise to individual sites?which would generate more traffic?I am looking to advertise free, any pointers?

Generally free ad sites are not very effective.

If you are serious about earning money I recommend you get your own domain and website/ blog. If you don't have the money use Myspace and other social networking sites where you can place advertisements on your profile page and/or write an article related to the product you are promoting and submit it to the article directories and include your link in the resource box below the article (use http://www.shorturl.com or similar service) so people do not see it is an affiliate link.
