Yes and no. If you aren't the owner of the product being sold or you don't already have a high-traffic website, then no, you aren't going to make any money at it. Yes it is possible. Though you'll find you'll make more money via google adsense rather than affiliate progams... And you do need to know what you're doing too of course.
I make reasonble money via google's adsense :) It's pretty safe to say that google *arn't* scam artists eitehr, which is a massive plus!! :) Google lets you add your own adsense ads on a blog set up on their site - http://www.blogger.com - too, which means you'll have zero start up costs... (Just aim to write about what you know and/or your life, rather than aim just to make money via your blog). You can earn a comfortable living with affiliate sites. But, don't expect it to happen to fast. It takes time, a small investment, and commitment. One of the reasons most people fail is they don't do their research firs. You must be careful there are just to many scams on the Internet.
If I may suggest, do the following.
1-Join Click Bank, Connection Junction, Pay Dot, and Affiliates Directories. They are all Free to Join, have virtually no Risk and you will get paid for your efforts.
2-Select a "two tier program" that uses cookies tracking.
3-Do a goggle search on the program to make sure there is enough traffic.
4-Start with something very easy. You might look at Affiliate Junktion (http://www.electrifiedincome.com) This is probably one of the simplest to get started with. You don't have to promote a product just the program.
5-Always, always make your own splash page, this can increase the SEO ranking.
